Manslaughter Charge Laid After Fatal Collision on HWY 17

The Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Crime Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal multi vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on May 28, 2018, on Highway 17 in Walden Township, Ontario.

As a result of the investigation Michael SPENCER, 31 years of age, of Sudbury, Ontario was arrested and charged with:

  • Manslaughter
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm

The accused appeared for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, Ontario on June 11, 2018, and a publication ban is now in place.

The collision occurred on Highway 17 just west of Lively, Ontario. There were four vehicles involved in the collision and the passenger of one of the vehicles, a 71 year old female, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three other people were transported to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Matthews of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Services (OCC-FPS).
